When the Navy opened the doors to a health clinic at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in March 1972, Adm. Joel T. Boone was nearing the end of his life and too ill to participate in the building's namesake ceremony. .

Boone did not live or minister in the Tidewater region and died in 1974 without ever seeing the clinic. But he was respected in the Navy medical community and had the skills to be there when history was made, according to one historian.

Brown served in three wars and was physician to three presidents. According to the Chronicle and Naval Historian, he was the most decorated medical officer in naval history and only the second recipient of the Medal of Honor.
"What better way to dedicate this building to the medical needs of our great Navy than to name this building after the great veterans of America's Navy," said Navy Surgeon General George Davis in 1972. The Boone clinic, built in 1972 for $2 million, completed an extensive $3.8 million renovation last month, including new heating, air, sprinkler and alarm systems, the Navy said.
Today, the clinic provides medical services to military personnel, including primary and emergency care, psychiatry, obstetrics and dentistry.

Boone's claim to history dates back to World War I, when he served as a medic in the Sixth Regiment of the Marine Corps.
On July 19, 1918, he ran across an open field under enemy fire to wound a Marine near Virzi, France. He ran back through the fire to resupply and repeated the task the same day. For his heroism, he was awarded the nation's highest honor: the Medal of Honor, one of many awards he received during his career.

It was visited by Presidents Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover from 1922 to 1933, and was with Harding when the president died of a massive hemorrhage in 1923. He successfully cured President Hoover's son of tuberculosis.
