The legend of the March mustache began during the conflicts in Vietnam, when Olds grew his mustache beyond Air Force regulations. His moustache, which some would call very impressive, inspired aviators to grow mustaches alongside him. This trend was a way for pilots to rise up and challenge the status quo.

Olds was the first ace of the 479th Fighter Group, killing five enemy soldiers. At the age of 22, he was given command of the 434th Fighter Squadron. According to Air Force fact sheets, one of his greatest successes is credited with planning and leading Operation Bolo in Vietnam.

For years after his service, the Air Force honored him by growing a mustache to tickle lips, catch crumbs and deflect kisses.

In 2014, US Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh III challenged the entire Air Force to grow mustaches. Needless to say, aviators around the world responded enthusiastically to his challenge.

"There are going to be women who think they're going to be left out of this," Welsh said when she challenged the Air Force. "But it's not because the women of our Air Force play a vital role in the Mustache March. Their job is to mock us endlessly..."
