Hk Mk23 Socom - The story of the MK23 began in 1991, with the Assault Pistol Weapons Program. The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) wanted to find an accurate and reliable sidearm that could provide more stopping power than the recently adopted Beretta M9 pistol. While the M9 is not an ineffective side weapon, its 9mm pistol ammunition provides far less stopping power than the M1911A1 it replaces.
In an effort to reduce the number of pistols used among various special operations personnel and return to the greater stopping power provided by the M1911A1 and its .45 ACP cartridge, SOCOM sought a new pistol.

In general, the pistol is a type of last defense weapon, not intended to be a soldier's primary weapon - like the Beretta M9. But SOCOM doesn't want a backup, they want an assault pistol. Their requirements are many. Overall length can be no more than about 12 inches or about 16 inches with a pusher. Candidates must have a 10-round magazine capacity and must be very strong.

Importantly, the gun must be chambered with .45 ACP - and not just any .45 ACP, but high-powered 185-grain + P ammunition. Produces about 10% more chamber pressure than standard .45 ACP ammunition, the new pistols should handle this with ease.
One of Germany's most respected firearms manufacturers, Heckler & Koch, answered SOCOM's call and submitted a Mark 23 pistol for evaluation.
Their design is very tough. The large gun's corrosion resistant polymer frame is topped with a strong machined steel slide. Heckler & Koch found the pistol suitable thanks in part to a lighter trigger, and a barrel length of 5.87 inches. The barrel itself has polygonal rifling and is chrome plated for superior corrosion resistance.
The MK23 has a double stack magazine, offering a high 12-round pistol capacity, a large capacity advantage over the single 7-round stack capacity of the M1911. Additionally, the MK23 features an ambidextrous magazine release and safety. The MK23 also has a mount for laser aiming devices or tactical lights.

According to the Heckler & Koch website, the Mark 23 underwent some very rigorous tests - and came out not only intact but maintaining its peak accuracy:
"Durability tests show a service life of more than 30,000 rounds of +P ammunition. To meet the reliability requirements, the gun must show a minimum of 2,000 average rounds between stops (MRBS) with M1911 balls and +P ammunition. All pistols exceed 2000 MRBS with an average 6000 MRBS. In more than 450 precision fire accuracy tests at 25 meters, the MK 23 pistol far exceeded government requirements, averaging 1.44 inches, with 65 groups less than one inch. There were four groups of 0.5 inches, with 5 turns through the same hole!
Interestingly, the early prototype MK23 also had a retractable slide lock that could be activated. When activated, the gun can fire one round without changing the slide. The advantage is noise reduction for conditions that demand extreme silence, although in later production models this feature was removed.
Eventually Heckler & Koch delivered 1,950 MK23s to USSOCOM. They also offered the pistol in the civilian market, where, despite its large size and high price, it was a commercial success. Leave it to the Germans: they make great pistols.

Many of you may be familiar with the H&K USP, but did you know that the H&K USP has a bigger brother and was developed at the same time? In the early 1990s US SOCOM needed a new service pistol. They conducted trials of the Assault Pistol Weapon System. Only Colt and H&K participated. The Colt OHWS pilot failed which left the door open for H&K to make their entry into the MK23MOD0. It won a contract with H&K to make a civilian version called the MARK23.
The OHWS program wants a major offensive pistol. Yes, they want the gun to be their main weapon. One of the reasons colt OHWS failed was that it could not shoot high pressure ammunition such as .45 Super or +P .45 acp. Another reason Colt failed was to use suppressors. The Colt pistol uses a muzzle brake which makes pressing the Colt more complicated.
You can see what the OHWS program requires just by looking at the photo of the OHWS failed colt above. SOCOM wanted a pistol that was suppressed and used a Laser Aiming Module (LAM).

H&K made the MK23 while Knight's Armament won the contract to supply the MK23 with its suppressor. H&K submitted an eccentric box-shaped suppressor but the KAC was chosen to be the only prototype that remained.
In the photo below you can see the cylindrical shape of the KAC suppressor and below is the square H&K Phase 1 suppressor.
Like the Colt OHWS, the MK23 also uses a LAM. Both Insight and Wilcox developed a laser targeting module for the MK23. In the photo above you can see some variations. The lower MK23 has US GOVT engraved on the slide while the upper MK23 has "USSOCOM" engraved. LAMs are both made by Insight. The big box was the prototype and the Insight ditched that design for a sleeker setup that you can see below.
Wilcox's unit is called the Nightstalker. It consists of three parts. The mount and paddle switch are located under the trigger guard, the light unit on the bottom and the laser unit in the middle. You can remove the light and use only the laser or remove the laser only for the light. Both light and lasers have visible and IR spectrum modes. The second generation Nightstalker Laser incorporates an LCD screen below so you know what mode you're in. You can change the pulse and brightness of the laser. You can also turn off the flashlight bulb to control the amount of light.

Most people collect H&K MARK23 for one of two reasons. One of them is his history in US SOCOM issued to Special Forces. Another reason is the 1998 video game hit, Konami's Metal Gear Solid for Playstation.
You probably like guns because they are prominently featured in silly video games. I answer that with the fact that almost no one has MARK23 issued. That's all kinds of hero worship. Guns can be fun and interesting for many reasons. Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest video games of all time and has a lot of gun porn in it. It caused a lot of boys in the 90s to love guns and end up buying the original version of the gun. How is it different from people who collect weapons from wars/wars that they did not participate in and were alive?
I started collecting MK23 airsoft in the early 2000's. One is a simple spring action pistol, the second from the bottom is a non-blow back (NBB) version. Both are made by Tokyo Marui. Second from the top is the gas blowback version from KSC. The Tokyo Marui NBB is equipped with a dummy suppressor and insight prototype style LAM unit. The LAM uses three AAA batteries and only white and red LEDs. Not very bright and does not have a laser. Then another airsoft company came out with their own LAM that used a Surefire bulb and had a red laser on it. That's the Wolf M97 you see in the original MARK23 below.

In short, the real insight is that the LAM AN / PEQ6 LM450 can take more than the combined Mark23 and KAC suppressors. It is for LAM units issued surplus. Wilcox units are semi rare because they are made in much smaller numbers and can run north of $3,000. That's a bit much for a well used old LAM from the 1990s. But availability and demand continue to conspire to make the Insight more expensive.
The MK23 doesn't seem that big if you look at the photos. But once you see it in person, your perception will change. MARK23 is about the size of a Desert Eagle. Below you can see it is almost as big as my MP5K Omega.
So MK23 and MARK23 have different carvings. In addition to the differences between US SOCOM
